It started with a pig. Specifically, the “free” pigs on the craigslist ad, which lead to my husband’s sudden desire to be a pig farmer. In case you are not aware, pigs reproduce. Well, we brought the male and female home and within a month or so became proud “grandparents” of their little piglets. Since we had only thought as far as wanting free pigs, we realized we probably didn’t want more piglets at that time and we would need to relocate the male pig (boar). My husband decided it needed to be relocated to our freezer. Several hours of work and replaying YouTube butchering videos later, we had pig in our freezer.
You are probably wondering why I started a community post talking about butchering a pig. Our homesteading community started with this pig. A few months after this pig had been butchered, I saw an acquaintance’s post on Facebook. She asked if anyone knew how to butcher a pig and I responded to her saying that my husband had some experience.
So, it began. What started as a couple of families desires to provide their own meat on their tables lead to a multiple family butchering operation that lasted several years. We created a fluid homestead community.
